MONTCLAIR, San Bernardino County — Two people on a Halloween-themed group bicycle ride were killed Saturday night, Oct. 24, 2026, when a driver collided with several riders on a Montclair street and fled, according to the Montclair Police Department as reported by CBS News Los Angeles.

What happened

Police said the crash was reported at about 10:39 p.m. in the area of Kingsley Street and Tudor Avenue. Investigators determined that about 30 bicyclists, taking part in a self-organized Halloween ride, were traveling eastbound on Kingsley Street when a driver struck several of them. The driver left the scene immediately after the collisions.

Casualties

One bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. A second rider was taken to a local hospital and later died. Another person was hospitalized with major injuries and was reported to be in stable condition, and an additional rider had minor injuries and declined treatment, police said.

Arrest and investigation

Police said officers identified the driver and found him at his home about a mile from the crash scene. A 38-year-old man was arrested at about 2:40 a.m. Sunday, roughly four hours after the crash, on suspicion of DUI causing injury or death, felony hit-and-run involving death, and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. He was booked into the West Valley Detention Center. A Montclair police lieutenant told CBS News Los Angeles that resources were deployed immediately and that detectives were able to quickly connect the pieces and take the suspect into custody.

An arrest on suspicion of a crime is not a conviction; the charges against the man are allegations, and the investigation was ongoing at the time of the reports we reviewed. Additional details, including any formal charges, had not been confirmed in the sources reviewed.

Community response

A memorial of flowers and balloons was set up at the corner where the collision happened, and relatives of the victims visited throughout the day Sunday, CBS News Los Angeles reported.

Why it matters for drivers and riders

The crash is a reminder that group rides and holiday events put many vulnerable road users on local streets at night. Drivers should expect cyclists, pedestrians and event crowds around Halloween, and should never drive after drinking.
