The Los Angeles Police Department has arrested a woman it says was the driver in a September hit-and-run crash in the Hyde Park area of South Los Angeles that killed a 16-year-old boy and critically injured his younger sister, according to a MyNewsLA.com report on a police news conference held Thursday, October 29.

The crash

The LAPD said the crash happened at about 9:35 p.m. on September 22 at the intersection of 60th Street and 10th Avenue. The 16-year-old died at the scene. His younger sister was also struck and critically injured. Her brother told reporters she suffered a fractured pelvis and needed surgery, and that their mother, who was not hit, pulled the girl away from the car.

Police allege the driver was traveling eastbound on 60th Street in a blue 2025 Nissan Sentra and ran a stop sign at 80 mph before striking the siblings. Police said the driver kept going until the sedan hit a parked vehicle. The driver and a female passenger then got out and ran from the scene. According to police, they took some items from the car before someone in a red Honda Accord picked them up. Witnesses said the boy was lodged in the Sentra's windshield until the car hit the parked vehicle. An LAPD South Traffic Division detective said the driver swerved in an attempt to dislodge the injured teen.

Arrest and custody

Police said the 28-year-old suspect was arrested at about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 28, in Los Angeles. She was booked into the county jail and was being held in lieu of $3.26 million bail. The LAPD said the passenger has been identified. The report reviewed did not say whether the passenger has been arrested or charged.

According to the LAPD, the suspect has previously been cited nine times for reckless driving and running stop signs. Police also said she was wanted in connection with multiple robberies, including 10 in Los Angeles. The report reviewed did not list the specific charges she faces in the crash.

What to know

The case is an example of how hit-and-run investigations can take weeks and depend on public tips and follow-up work by traffic detectives. The allegations described here come from police statements. The suspect is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
