- Vehicle damage from multiple angles, all vehicles involved
- License plates of all vehicles
- Road conditions, skid marks, and debris
- Traffic signs, signals, and lane markings
- The overall scene from a distance for context
Information to record
Note the time, weather, and lighting; the exact location; witnesses' contact details; and a brief factual description of what happened — not your opinion of fault.
Why witnesses matter
Independent witnesses can corroborate what happened long after the scene clears. Collect names and phone numbers before anyone leaves, and share them with your insurer and the police.
